Generally, when someone gives a loan, we don’t view it as a loss to the lender; however, there are instances when a lender may lose by loaning his money to someone. For example, the lender may have a potential business opportunity to invest in that he could have turned a profit if he were to keep the money for himself. In such a situation, is he obligated to lend the money and fulfill the mitzvah of “ im kesef talvah ”, or can he keep it for his own investment?

There are typically two types of loans: loans given to poor people who need the money to live, and loans given to people of means who need liquid assets at the moment. Is the mitzvah of lending money only applicable when one is lending to a poor person, or does one also get a mitzvah when he lends to a rich person?

Many people use heter iskas when giving loans. Essentially, a heter iska restructures a loan as a business investment so that the lender is permitted to take interest and make a profit. Does someone still fulfill the mitzvah of lending money if he gives the loan with a heter iska ?
