How Does One Accept The Responsibility to be a Shomer?

I was at the gate in an airport, waiting for a flight. Another frum Yid was waiting for the same flight and asked if I could keep an eye on his laptop while he went to the bathroom. The man put his laptop down next to me and walked away. I then got immersed in an important phone call and, when I looked down, the laptop was gone. Am I liable to pay for it?

In the previous segment, we said that when someone puts his bag down in an airport next to someone else, the other person is not liable if he did not clearly accept to become a shomer . You said that there is also a second reason why he would be patur . What is that reason?

If Someone Disobeys Instructions When Renting a Car, Is He Liable For All Eventualities?

Reuven was going on vacation and rented a car from his neighbor, Shimon. Shimon clearly told him not to take the car off-road and to stick to paved streets. Reuven was staying in a cabin by the lake, at the end of a dirt road. Generally, he observed the rule and parked at the beginning of the road and walked the distance to the cabin. One hot day, he broke the rule and began driving the car down the dirt road. On the way to the cabin, he was carjacked at gunpoint and the car was stolen. Is he responsible to pay?
